Eucalyptus Plantations - South East Queensland

National Trust Queensland maintains four Eucalyptus plantations of varying sizes.

Located in Gold Coast suburbs of Currumbin, Merrimac and Neranwood and also nearby in Uki located in Northern NSW, these plantations have been specifically planted to satisfy the fussy eating habits of Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary koalas.

There are 24 different species of eucalypts among the 20,000 trees growing in the plantations that are crucial to the survival of the species as wild eucalypt habitat continues to shrink due to urban development, bushfires etc.

The plantations are harvested daily to provide ideal dietary requirements for the healthy koalas cared for in the Sanctuary and sick and injured koalas cared for at Currumbin Wildlife Hospital.

A team of dedicated gum-cutters harvest eucalypt six days each week, in all weather conditions to ensure that only the best eucalypt available is offered to our koalas.

Each plantation requires quality care to ensure they remain healthy and sustainable into the future and National Trust Queensland continues to look for suitable land to establish additional plantations as the number of koalas needing our care continues to grow rapidly.

Currumbin

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary guest carpark doubles as a plantation. There are currently 1500 trees in this location with plans to increase the number of trees in the future.

Merrimac

With more than 10,000 trees, the Merrimac plantation in partnership with City of Gold coast is our largest.

Neranwood

Bordering Hinze Dam, the Neranwood Plantation is a good producer of quality eucalypt. This plantation, in partnership with SEQ water has more than 3000 trees however due to its location, access is limited when nearby creeks flood.

Uki

This plantation in Northern NSW provides us with more than 3,500 trees to harvest from. A long-term agreement and partnership with Tweed Shire Council ensures that we have a suitable supply of eucalypt for our koalas. Plans are underway to plant additional trees at this location.
